- Made in 96 hours for the GMTK 2024 Game Jam -

Notes:

  • if you got stuck you can press R to retry the puzzle. You can also press P to open the pause menu, which also has hints to help you if you're stuck!
  • The downloadable versions are currently a bit outdated, so you should play the web one!
  • Unfortunately, the last level contains a possible cheese where you can just expand all the Expanding Glorbs and move the first one to easily beat the level. I wasn't able to fix this within the time frame, but I recommend you try solving the puzzle in the intended way for the best experience! :D

Story

The deadly sun has claimed the lives of too many Shadeslugs... It is time to take action. Find the legendary Shadow Card to turn off the sun itself and save the shades forevermore.

Life as a Shadeslug can be tough in a place where there's plenty of deadly sunlight! Luckily for you, you'll find many Glorbs along the way. Glorbs are strange but friendly cube-shaped creatures which are built to scale and change their shape!

Use transformation cards to manipulate the scale and positions of the various Glorbs in the level in order to block the sunlight and create some nice shade, allowing you to pass through!

Development

Shadescale is a puzzle game developed in less than 96 hours for the GMTK game jam 2024! The theme was Built To Scale, which is conveyed through the scaling and transforming of Glorbs to create shadows. I used the Godot Game Engine, as well as Aseprite for the art.

I've found the game really enjoyable and well refined. The art is amazing, love the animations.
I just think that the sound and SFX are a bit annoying when playing for a long time.

Thanks! And yeah I wasn't sure on some of the SFX either...

Cute! Especially the bit where you gloss over the extinction of most of the other life on the planet. However, the last level (not the one with the shadow card, the one before it) can be easily beaten by standing under a blue glorb platform as it moves. Is this intentional?

Thanks for telling me about the cheese, wasn't able to fix it but I added a disclaimer about it!
And yes who cares about non-shadeslug lifeforms :D

I think I have found a cheese for the second level featuring the glass glorbs.

Oh lmao, I completely missed this somehow... Thanks for reporting! (I probably won't risk reuploading the game files now though because the website usually crashes in GMTK game jams...)

Ended up fixing it in the browser version :)

the game was fun although i found it to be quite short and not that challenging

Thanks! And yeah jam games tend to be pretty short...
